Drilled Honeycomb

Honeycomb

Drilled (vented) Aluminum Honeycomb Core is high strength and lightweight product primarily used in tooling applications. The vents/grooves in the honeycomb facilitate the even distribution of heat throughout the tool. In addition to being laminated, the holes on the honeycomb wall allow fluid to pass through easily.

Properties
  • Lightweight
  • High Strength
  • Absorbs Energy
  • More Resistant to Destruction Through Collision
  • Holes on the Honeycomb Wall Allow Fluid to Pass Through Easily
  • Honeycomb is Laminated
  • Aluminum Alloy 3003
  • Use Temperature 180°C and Beyond
  • Coefficient of Thermal Expansion: 13.2 x 10-6 inch/inch-°F

Industry Applications
  • airflow control / heat transfer
  • tooling applications
  • energy absorption

Application Example

Drilled Honeycomb is used in the cooling of a blade mold in a wind power generator. During operation parts become heated and solidified; cold air is introduced into the mold along the holes on the honeycomb core to accelerate and control the cooling process. This process reduces the concentration of stress on the root of the blades, therefore, shorten the manufacturing cycle of parts.
